Ten notes for one moment, played on repeat.

Looking Back on This Year

Play it in the quiet last days of the year, or on New Year’s Eve before the celebrations. It takes two or three minutes. Afterwards, write down three things from this year you’re grateful for, and one thing you’d like to carry forward.

  1. The year is ending. Before I look ahead, I look back with thanks.
  2. I made it through this year, the good months and the hard ones.
  3. Old friends and new ones stood by me this year, and I won’t forget it.
  4. I remember the happy moments, even the ordinary days that felt just right.
  5. Even what didn’t go my way taught me something.
  6. I’m not quite the same person I was last January.
  7. Some hopes didn’t happen. I let them go without carrying blame into the new year.
  8. Anyone I lost this year, I remember with thanks for the time we had.
  9. Small, steady things held my year together. Routines and comforts count too.
  10. I close this year with gratitude and carry the best of it into the next.

Why it’s written this way

The end of the year tends to bring either a rush toward resolutions or a long list of what went wrong. This loop sits between the two. It looks back with thanks first, so the new year starts from appreciation rather than from a sense of falling short.

The notes move through the year in layers: getting through it, the people who stood by you, the moments that made you happy, and what you learned, especially from what didn’t go your way. Each one asks you to picture something real from your own year.

The later notes handle the harder parts with care. Hopes that didn’t happen are let go without blame, and anyone you lost is remembered with gratitude for the time you had. The note about small, steady things honors what quietly held the year together. It ends by carrying the best of this year into the next.
