Ten notes for one moment, played on repeat.

Ready for the Interview

Play this in the last hour before a job interview: on the train, in the parking lot, or with your camera off before a video call. It takes two or three minutes to play through once. Let it loop two or three times, read your notes about the job one last time, and go in.

  1. Interview day. They asked to meet me, and they want this to go well too.
  2. Nobody knows my story better than I do. I’ve lived every line on my résumé.
  3. My examples are ready. I tell them simply and let them speak for me.
  4. When a question surprises me, I pause and think. Quiet sounds thoughtful, not lost.
  5. If I don’t know, I say so and explain how I’d find out.
  6. I’m interviewing them too, and finding out if this place is right for me.
  7. Nerves mean I care. Slow, low breaths.
  8. Sitting back, I listen to the whole question before I answer.
  9. Today teaches me something for the next one, either way.
  10. Prepared and honest, with work I’m proud of. That’s all this needs from me.

Why it’s written this way

Each note holds one idea you can use in the room: you were invited for a reason, you know your own story, you have examples ready, you can pause, and you can say you don’t know. None of them asks you to believe you’ll get the job, because nobody can promise that. They are all things that are already true, or things you can do today, so you can say them with a straight face.

The loop starts with why you’re there, moves on to how you’ll answer, then deals with the two fears most people carry in: going blank and being judged. The reminder that you’re interviewing them too turns the meeting into a two-way conversation. It ends on what you’re bringing with you, so when it loops back to the start you hear again that they already want to meet you.
